Expat Communities
Finding your tribe in Montenegro. From online groups to real-life meetups.
Pro Tip: Get on Telegram
While Facebook is for general advice, Telegram is where the real daily life happens. Every city (Tivat, Bar, Budva) has active chats for:
Where do you fit in?
Each city in Montenegro draws a different type of crowd. Here is the general "vibe" of the main hubs:
Tivat
Posh & InternationalHome to Porto Montenegro. The most English-speaking town. Very organized, clean, and family-friendly, but expensive.
Budva
Busy & Russian-speakingThe tourism capital. Fast-paced, lots of nightlife. High concentration of Russian/Ukrainian expats.
Bar
Laid-back & DiverseA real working city, not just for tourists. Flat terrain (good for strollers!), cheaper interact, and a large Russian community.
Kotor
Historic & ArtisticStunning but crowded in summer. The expat community here is smaller, tight-knit, and artsy.
Podgorica
Business & DiplomaticThe capital. Not touristy. Home to embassy staff, NGO workers, and international business people.
Essential Online Groups
The original and largest group. Good for general advice, but use the search bar first!
A supportive community for women. Great for making friends and social meetups.
The best place to find long-term rentals without agent fees. Highly active.
City-specific chats (Telegram is huge here). Ask in Facebook groups for the invite link to your city's chat.
Regular Meetups
- Tivat Coffee MorningsUsually Wednesdays. Check "Tivat Ladies" Facebook group.
- Bar Game NightsBoard games & trivia at local pubs. Very active Russian/English crowd.
- Digital Nomad DinnersOften organized in coworking spaces in Podgorica & Tivat.
Community Etiquette
Montenegrins are very hospitable but direct.
- • "Kafa" (Coffee) is a ritual, not a quick drink. It lasts hours.
- • Don't refuse food if offered.
- • Learn to say "Dobar dan" (Good day) to shopkeepers.
